Foreword
The pet system in Uncharted Water Online (UWO) is fantastic, mysterious and interesting. It is just like Aide system in UWO which provides various options but also the rules would be simple behind it. It is worthy to investigate and make those rules clear then helping players having the pet most suitable to them. Having a rare and exotic beast is not a dream anymore!
The data in this article were collected by several UWO databases – English, Japanese and Chinese. It requires a big amount of translation work so that It is hard to guarantee there is no error in this article, but I tried my best to test and verify them in the game. Don’t hesitate to tell me or company’s administrators if you find anything wrong on this page.
Okay. Hello guys, I’m yuTo, a new member of WindRider_Academy, and I’m very happy to make my first contribution to the company!
Why Pets?
Absolutely people need a pet (or many pets)! Although these creatures cannot speak a human language, they can heal your soul when you feel lonely. In UWO, the pets can help you not only for companions but also on their special skills.
Before jumping too much in this article, let me introduce two friends first – Mr. Cute and Mr. Foot! Mr. Cute is a red panda and everyone can get one by completing the challenge mission. Mr. Foot is a Macaroni Penguin. Most of the experiences of pets in the game I got were from them.

The initial status of Mr. Cute – No intimacy, no skills, and it requires quarter rank 1 only…

Compared to Mr. Cute, Mr. Foot requires quarter rank 2.
Pet’s Skills
Pets skills – I think this is why most other players love pets because they can really help you in some conditions. Each pet has 3 skills at most. The following two tables show you the types of pets skills and an entire list of mapping pets with skills.
Types of Pet’s Skills
| Skill Name | Icon | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Fish Searching | When fishing, your Pet will attempt to find the presence of additional fish. Chance to obtain additional Trade Goods. Success rate increases with Intimacy. | |
| Additional discovery | After making a Discovery, your Pet will attempt to search for items. Success rate increases with Intimacy. | |
| Area search (land) | After using the Procurement or Collection Skill on Land, your Pet will attempt to search for items. Success rate increases with Intimacy. | |
| Area search (sea) | After using the Procurement or Collection Skill at Sea, your Pet will attempt to search for items. Success rate increases with Intimacy. | |
| Area search (land and sea) | After using the Procurement or Collection Skill on Land or at Sea, your Pet will attempt to search for items. Success rate increases with Intimacy. * | |
| Pet plundering (land and sea) | After winning Sea Battles, Land Battles or Deck Battles, your Pet will attempt to search for items. Success rate increases with Intimacy. * | |
| Pet plundering (land) | After winning Land Battles or Deck Battles, your Pet will attempt to search for items. Success rate increases with Intimacy. | |
| Pet plundering (sea) | After winning Sea Battles, your Pet will attempt to search for items. Success rate increases with Intimacy. * | |
| Area scouting | After using the Surveying Skill on Land, discover enemy locations. Amount of locations increase depending on the Pet Training Skill Rank. | |
| Area caution | Chance to decrease rate of enemy encounters for Sea Battles. Success rate increases with Intimacy. | |
| Scare | Chance to decrease rate of enemy encounters for Land Battles. Success rate increases with Intimacy. |
What is the best Pet’s Skill?
Well, this is a question has been asked so many times. I don’ think there is a ‘best’ pet’s skill but there are good skills fit to you. Everyone should have his/her own choice. E.g. you may enjoy ‘pet plundering’ skill if you are a marine and fighting with privates all the time. For myself, I’d like to have a pet with ‘Additional discovery’ and ‘Scare’ skills because I’m a treasure hunter – ‘Scare’ skill could reduce the rate of enemy encounters for land battle, and ‘Additional discovery’ skill could find extra goods when I researching successfully.

How to Enable Pet’s Skills
Have you picked up which skills you want most? It may be a big reason or factor to push you to get a pet who matches your requirement on skills. I guess your next question may ask “How can I get a pet I want?”. Hold on for a second, let’s skip that question and look for how should we enable the skills of a pet – A pet cannot help you if his/her skill is not enabled.
In short, the pet’s skills are based on the intimacy level and the Pet Training level. It can be easy to check when you move your mouse upon the skill question mark.

A good example to show the first skill of Mr. Cute requires intimacy level 20 and Pet Training Skill rank 1.

Different pet has a different requirement in their skills. The first skill of Mr. Foot requires Intimacy level 40 and Pet Training Skill rank 2.
So the answer is quite simple as well – you have to increase the intimacy of the pet, also increase your Pet Training skill level. Keep in mind, the requirement of each skill is progressive, one by one. The first skill may need 20 intimacy, then the second one may require 80 intimacy. You will find how does intimacy system work and how to improve your Pet Training level in the following sections.

Mr. Foot has enabled his first skill when intimacy reached 40 and my Pet Training skill was 2.
Tips: Pet’s skills are passive, they have a chance to use it when it matches the trigger condition. The chance can be increased by Intimacy which will be introduced by the next section.
Intimacy System
As mentioned above, intimacy is one of the key factors for pet’s skills. There is an intimacy system behind it and I’m looking for testing it out. The following sections introduce the range, limit, the way of increasing, and some tips of the intimacy system.
- Intimacy Range and Limit
- Basically, the intimacy range of a pet is 0 to 200.
- Before any sailing, you can feed your pet and increase intimacy to 30 at most, then the intimacy won’t be increased anymore without sailing. I call it – Intimacy limit.
- The Intimacy limit can be increased by sailing, it will increase 1 if you sail 5 days at sea. E.g. If you feed your pet after 5 days sailing, your pet can increase the intimacy 1 point at most; If you sail more than 10 days, your pet can get 2 intimacy limit points increased.
- When counting the days on sailing, it counts all days between the last time you fed and now. E.g. I started my sailing from Athens, stopped by Marseille, Seville, and Basra, I didn’t feed Mr. Cute in those 79 days. As the formula, each 5-day increases 1 intimacy limit, Mr. Cute can increase 15 intimacy limit points in total. For the test result, Mr. Cute’s intimacy has increased from 52 to 67 after fed just as the expectation.
- Intimacy Improvement
- There are two ways to improve the intimacy of the pet: feeding and playing toys.
- Most pets can accept two kinds of food, one called favorite food, another one called acceptable food. The difference is the intimacy could increase 5 (if it doesn’t hit the limit mentioned above) by using a favorite food, and the intimacy could increase 2 by using an acceptable food.
- Whenever your pet hit the intimacy limit, you will get nothing whatever kinds of food you feed more until you increasing the intimacy limit by sail.
- Few pets just accept only 1 kind of food, it is treated as the favorite food. E.g. Giant Panda eats Bamboo leaves only.
- You can always feed your pet on land or at sea, your pet may ask your attention at sea which informs you to feed him/her.
- Using a toy can increase 5 intimacy. Pet toy cannot be used normally on land or at sea. It can be used until needed, at sea.
-
Specially:
After intimacy reached 100, the intimacy can be increased ONLY IF your pet needs an action (e.g. your pet says he/she needs an attention, your pet feels lonely, your pet is looking a little hungry, etc.) at sea then you feed or play toy with him/her.
After intimacy reached 120, the acceptable food cannot increase intimacy anymore, ONLY favorite food or play toy can increase the intimacy when your pet wants an action at sea.
- Special items to accelerate intimacy improvement
- Love Collar – Love Collar is a consumable and it can double the pet intimacy level gained for 30 minutes. E.g. An acceptable can gain 4 intimacy points this time. But the intimacy limit is still working which means you will gain nothing if you hit it. Since this item takes 30 mins only, so my suggestion is to enlarge your intimacy limit first, then using Love Collar and feeding your pet.
-

A screenshot of Love Collar
- Heaty Special Meal – Heaty Special Meal is a big ‘magic’ to me, it can maximize the intimacy level of a pet! No requirement, no limitation…
-

A screenshot of Hearty Special Meal
- Both Love Collar and Heaty Special Meal can be obtained by UWC shop only. (Notice, the items in UWC shop are always changed by version or by season, you may not find them now in the shop)
- Others Tips
- Just like Aide getting experience, the intimacy limit won’t be increased if you just go out of a port but don’t move. It is only increased when you sail.
- The intimacy will remain if you transfer your pet between your characters by shared storage.
- The intimacy will be clear to 0 if you transfer your pet to another player in another account, the intimacy of previous pet will be added to your first pet in your bag (if you have).
- The intimacy won’t be decreased if you feed food but your pet doesn’t like.
- The intimacy won’t be decreased if you don’t feed your pet at all.
-
That means you should always bring your pet with you even you don’t have food for them, the intimacy won’t be reduced but intimacy limit will be increased. I will keep testing it to make sure there is not any hidden punishment behind it, but I didn’t see anything bad yet.
- Your pet would be happy when you feed him/her, both using favorite food or acceptable food can trigger it, but the chance of using favorite food is much higher.
- You cannot feed your pet at sea if your other three skills are using already.
- Your pet will show up when you having a bazaar if your pet’s intimacy is over a certain number. 100 was the one I got from the internet, but my test shows Mr. Foot showed up when his intimacy is 70.
- The intimacy will be decreased if you leave your pet to Trainer. It happens when you switch a new pet goes with you, your old pet will switch back to a card in your inventory.
-

I switch to Mr. Foot and leave Mr. Cute to pet trainer, the intimacy of Mr. Cute was reduced from 108 to 107 after 10-15 days sailing…
- To avoid the intimacy reducing, you can put your pet to bank vault or strong box.
Pets Food and Toy
- Each pet needs different food than others, but in general, there are certain types of food and you can cook them by six town’s man recipes –

Pet Training Skill
As another key factor to enable your pet’s skills, you need to increase your skill level of Pet Training hard. For example, the first skill of Mr. Cute requires Pet Training level 1, the second skill requires Pet Training level 4, and the third one requires a level 8 skill.
Pet Training is a passive skill. It increases each time you sailing with your pets. As a test result, the skill won’t be shown as increased until you reach a port. The skill won’t be increased if you don’t have any pet going with you. (need to check and verify)
To gain the Pet Training skill, you should visit Queen Consort Maria who is living in Antwerp.
There is a job position named Breeder which has an expert skill in Pet Training (Pet Training skill +1), it requires a total-level 50 of your character with adventure level 30 and trade level 10. Also, Breeder is the only position Pet Training skill favored in the game.
If you are interested to become a Breeder, check the quest guide: Walking Together.
Tips: Pet Training Skill is increased every time your pet’s stills triggered. E.g. My Pet Training Skill increased from 383 to 387 after Mr. Foot started his ‘Fish searching’ skill.
Pets Acquirement
Alright, it is the time to answer your question at the beginning – “How do I get a pet I want?”
Before you fall in love with your pets, you have to know:
- Normally, you can get multiple pets but choose a single one goes with you.
- A special consumable item – Expert Pet Breeder Certificate (a UWC shop item) – can increase the slot of pets plus one, which means you can take two pets going with you, persistently.
In general, there are three ways to obtain a pet:
- Missions – Some of the pets can be gained by completing missions, e.g. you can get a Red Panda by finishing the challenge mission.
- Buy from players – Pets can be traded between players.
- Quests – Most pets have their own quests to get. You can follow the next table to figure out which quest a pet needs.
Pet Recommendation
Some of the readers raised this question to me, and it may be the same question you have. Telling the best pet is hard, but I could give some recommendation for each job class, with reasons.
These recommendations are based on the pet’s skills, you could ignore this part if you were a big fan of a specific pet. E.g. Giant Panda is my dream pet, I want it whatever the skills he has.
You can also type the skill names into the search blank of Table of Pet’s Skills to look for the pet matching the skills combination you want, it is fast and the way I used.
- For Adventurers
- If you were a treasure hunter like me, I would prefer a pet has skills of ‘Additional discovery’, ‘Area search (land)’ and one of the skills from ‘Scare’ and ‘Area caution’.
- ‘Additional discovery’ can find extra stuff after you make a discovery successfully; ‘Area search (land)’ can find more staff after I use procurement or collection skills, and ‘Scare’ or ‘Area caution’ can reduce unnecessary battles on land or at sea.
- Dog, Turkey and Taiwan Magpie are my recommendations.

- For Traders
- ‘Fish searching’ is a good skill for traders, and traders would want to reduce the battle chance at sea, so ‘Area caution’ is a perfect one. the rest of skills are not so useful for traders in my opinion.
- Unfortunately, all those pets matched those two skills (Sea lion, Japanese cat, Siamese cat(Officer), Siamese(Princess) and Capybara) are special, you have to gain them by activities or purchase from the UWC shop.

- Another recommendation is the pets having ‘Fish searching’ and ‘Area searching (sea)’, which makes you benefit from both fishing and collecting.
- Platypus, Macaroni Penguin and Japanese Crane are my recommendation.

- For Marines
- For Marines, ‘Pet plundering (land and sea)’ is a dream skill but few pets have, maybe you can try to search ‘pet plundering (sea)’ or ‘pet plundering (land)’ instead.
- Again, all those special pets are good candidates, because they all have the skill of ‘pet plundering (land and sea).’
- Tarsier is another good candidate, it has both ‘pet plundering (sea)’ or ‘pet plundering (land)’ for his skill #1 and #2.

Thanks
Thanks to my company and everyone who gave me helps in UWO. I am new to this game and my character doesn’t have enough skills to handle and test everything mentioned in this article, but you guys helped me to purchase ingredients and cook pet food for me. Actually, I didn’t have enough confidence to make this guide at the beginning, Taichen encouraged me and trust me could make it which I really appreciate. MadMartha contributed the penguin for my research and shared his huge experiences, Korendir helped me to cook pet’s food back and forth across London and Venis. Because of your help, I can make this guide moving forward. Thank you, guys!
